# What is Polymarket and how does it work?

By PredictionToolkit · Published 2026-11-03

A Polymarket price only makes sense alongside the question it refers to, the price you can actually trade and the rule that decides the outcome. This guide follows those three parts from a market page to a resolved position.

## Begin with one contract

Polymarket lets participants trade outcome shares with one another through an order book. An event can contain several markets, so an event headline is not enough to identify the position. Open the exact YES/NO question and read its deadline, resolution source and exceptions. Two similarly named questions can settle differently.

## Read the price and the payoff separately

In an ordinary binary market, a share price between 0 and 1 expresses a market-implied probability. A price of 0.40 corresponds to 40%; it is a trading valuation, not a promise that a forecast is correct. Current documentation uses pUSD as collateral. A winning share normally redeems for 1 pUSD and a losing share for 0; the market's applicable resolution rules still control.

For example, if 10 YES shares fill at 0.40 pUSD each, the entry costs 4 pUSD before fees. A normal YES resolution pays 10 pUSD, leaving a 6 pUSD difference before costs; a NO resolution leaves those shares worth 0 and loses the 4 pUSD entry cost. This hypothetical example is not a current quote or a return forecast.

## A chart price is not an execution

The order book shows bids, asks and available size. Buying against a resting ask and selling into a bid can produce different prices from the chart. A larger order may consume several levels. A limit order controls the acceptable price but may fill partially or remain unfilled; selling before resolution also needs a willing counterparty. Include applicable fees when comparing entry, exit and final payout.

## Resolution follows the written conditions

The headline is a summary; the rules identify the source, timing and treatment of unusual cases. UMA-resolved markets have a proposal and dispute process. The documentation describes Chainlink TWAP resolution separately for up/down markets. Do not apply one mechanism or timetable to every contract, or assume that an event ending makes funds immediately redeemable.

## Check the account before committing funds

- Confirm current trading availability and account eligibility using official guidance; a readable market page does not establish permission to trade.
- Check the funding asset, network and destination provided by the actual account flow.
- Identify the account wallet and signer; public wallet lookup does not grant trading authority.
- Read the exact order preview, price, size and charges before confirming.
- Keep account access and recovery information private.

## Choose a tool for the next question

Use the official learning material for market concepts. For software, Gamma identifies events and markets, CLOB supplies order-book and trading interfaces, and the Data API serves public participation and wallet analytics. A dashboard, alert or paper simulation can help research, but it does not establish your live fill or final return. The linked API guide separates these data tasks before you build an integration.
